When you are choosing curtains you need to think about the colour, fabric, length, lining and the room itself. There are so many decisions to make when choosing a pair of curtains and so many different styles and patterns to choose from. In this blog we are going to discuss what you should consider when buying curtains.
The Colour And Fabric
The fabric you choose is so important as this material will dictate how the curtains last overtime. If you choose a heavy material they may not fold properly when drawn, and if they are too light the material might not be thick enough to stop light coming in. When choosing a fabric, it is often suggested that you should hold it up to the window so that you can see what light comes through and what the fabric looks like in sunlight. The fabric needs to be as large as possible as it will give much more of an accurate representation of the curtains when they’re hanging up in a room. It is important to remember that sunlight will fade fabrics overtime. If the room gets a lot of sunlight it would be a good idea to avoid bright colours as they will fade a lot faster. Usually linen, silk, faux and velvet are the best types of material for curtains as they tend to hang the best. Suede and velvet are usually a good fabric when trying to keep the heat in.
Length
Before you start to measure for your curtains you need to decide how high above the windows the curtains need to be. It is usually recommended that the curtains start 6 inches above the window frame. If you measure from the top of the window to the floor this will help give you an understanding of the length of your curtains, don’t forget to add on the inches from where the curtains will hang. When measuring the width of the window you will need to add between four and eight inches to both sides and double the total number to ensure the fullness of the curtain. This will mean there is no glass showing when the curtains are closed.
Machine Wash Or Dry Clean Only
If you want to be able to wash your curtains at home then you need to go for fabric that is machine washable, this will save you money in the long run. However, you need to remember that washing high quality curtains in a machine could potentially damage them. Having the curtains dry cleaned or choosing a fabric that is dry clean only will stop the curtains from becoming damaged, this could be more expensive but potentially worth it if your curtains will last longer.
